Jamdani Festival 2019

Jamdani is one the premium textiles in the Bengal region and is a proud representation of the craftsmanship of the weavers who show an immense range and intricacy in their designs. The National Crafts Council of Bangladesh and the Bengal Foundation are hosting the jamdani festival to celebrate the artistic integrity and finesse of that is beheld in these fabrics. Held at the Bengal Shilpalay, the exhibition showcased jamdani fabrics including collected pieces from museums and private collections.

The showcase paid homage to the skills and patience of the masterweavers along with the artisans from the newer generations. There were displays of age old saris and handkerchiefs that showed how the beauty of jamdani designs still stands strong. The minimalistic décor of the exhibition contrasted well with coloured motifs.

The live display of weavers practicing their art gave visitors a glimpse into the difficult and time consuming process that culminates into the gorgeous fabrics we know as jamdani. Reels of cottons and the needles were displayed along with long saris draped along the walls. There were four documentaries showed which was a depiction of the effort behind the intricacy of the designs , the weaving process and the life of weavers.

The jamdani festival not only provided glimpses into the richness of Bengali heritage, but also provided invaluable inspiration and proof that their creators are an integral part of our culture.
